isn't it traditional to wear the head covering in Roman Catholic services? I know that watching the lines that there were some women wearing them as well.

It's nice to see those pics of Laura Bush wearing a heed covering, but can we see some of Barbara as well? ;)

Yea, it's a catholic thing too... that's where the name "mantia" comes from if I recall correctly.

So the ladies at our assemblies are wearing catholic head coverings? (well, except for bridlegrove where there is actually a variety of funky head wraps and eastern shawls)

If George Sr.'s wife Barbara was there, does that mean she could be referred to as "Barbara Manatee"?

Larry: Barbra Manatee (Manatee, Manatee)
you are the one for me (one for me, one for me)
sent from up above (up above, up above)
you are the one i love (i love, i love, i love)

I don't know that she was there. there is so much contraversy going on with that right now with the snub to Pres. Carter. I think had she been there she would have been by President Bush Sr. Just my opinion knowing the other stuff about Carter.

What, they didn't invite Carter to the funeral? They probably didn't want to be sweeping peanut shells off the floor of the basilica for the next 2 weeks. ;)

boo!!! ;)

well, it was only going to be Pres. Bush. so Carter was fine with that, he felt close to this Pope since he was the first Pres. to recieve him when he became the Pope. then Pres. Bush was given permission to bring a delgation, this is when the stir started, he brought his father and Pres. Clinton and Condi Rice. everyone was asking why not let Carter come instead of Rice. there were never any clear cut answers. I think Pres. Bush screwed it up on this one. it looks really bad on his part.

The Catholics don't wear heading coverings in Canada anymore. For the 18 years I attended Catholic churches nearly every Sunday, I don't remember ever seeing anyone wearing a head covering.

My mother saw me wearing a head covering at Markham, when she came to my baptism. She told me that when she was a little girl, all females had to wear some sort of head covering to Catholic mass. Most females wore hats. In the 60's, there was the second Vatican council, where many of the Catholic rules were changed. After that, females didn't have to wear head coverings anymore.

I have heard (I don't have reference to back this up) that for most Protestant denominations, women used to wear head coverings to services up until about the same time that the Catholics stopped. I would be interested if anyone has any more info on this.

I've heard that repeated, Sarah, and I kept hearing (from assembly circles, mostly) that up until the early 1960s you could see a congregational group photo of any denominational church and most, if not all the ladies would be wearing hats. Then I looked at period photos from the Baptist church I attended. Not a hat to be found...

Yet, my grandmother always wore a nice hat to Christmas evening service in our United Church. Anecdotal evidence is as reliable as ever, I see. :?
